Steven: [00:00:58] So we all hear about the importance of knowing what you're after and why you're after it. But I think so many of us end up dropping the ball on getting extremely clear on that. I just want to illustrate a little bit of a reason on why this is so incredibly important.
We know this stuff, but we don't apply it. If we don't apply it, we don't do it. If we don't do it, then it doesn't make a difference in our life, which means we don't truly know it inside.
So if we're going to think about building our investing career, like going on a trip, like going on a journey, we're going to want to know where we're going before we start. Of course, if I want to jump in the car and just start driving, I'm going to end up somewhere, but I might not end up where I want to go.
So recently, actually right now, I'm recording from a vacation spot here in Hawaii. And when we were getting ready to go on this trip, it was pretty clear to me. I just sold the house, knew that there was a really great opportunity to be able to go and experience something different for a little bit, because I was pulling all my capital on my personal residence. I knew that now is a great time for me personally, to be able to pull that capital out and reallocate it into some commercial real estate and make some really smart decisions on pulling some capital and putting it in a nice safe place.
And so I was thinking, well, what could I do that I couldn't normally do if I was owning a house or I might be less prone to do owning a house? So I thought, well, I'm going to go on a little bit of a vacation, but it's going to be a working vacation, because we've got a lot of important projects that I'm excited about. And I got a few friends involved and we started talking about it. But what we were doing in this process is, we were getting clear on what we wanted. I knew why we wanted it, but I had to define it.
The purpose of this trip was to go have a unique experience to do something that most people don't do and to go enjoy the fruits of all this labor, putting in all this time, developing incredible relationships, serving past investors, going out and finding, operating partners that have 10, 20 years’ experience and then going forward and buying all these deals I am able to buy. It's made a huge difference in my life, but now it's time to actually go enjoy some of that.
So we got this crazy idea in our head. We were, Hey, let's go travel to someplace. But like I said, we didn't just jump in the car and start driving. We had to start thinking through what are some of the important things that we're looking for in a trip? What are some of the experiences? What's important in the type of housing? What kind of building are we looking for? Are we trying to go for the cheapest option? Are we trying to go for something that's luxury memorable and something that we might not be able to?
So long story short, we ended up looking all across the United States, but decided to go to Hawaii because of a quarantine that's in effect. And we thought, Hey, we're going to be working anyway. So why not get quarantined in a phenomenal place and essentially move to Hawaii and be able to enjoy this incredible place fully. And so that's essentially what we did. But the only reason we were able to arrive here and take advantage of the opportunity was because we got clear on what we want it and why we want it.
So I want to walk you guys through a little bit of my process. These are just some very easy steps that you can apply within your own life and business, and it's what I personally do, and so many other successful people do in order to be able to take themselves from where they are right now, to where they want to be.
So obviously, the first step is getting really, really clear on what you want and how do you go about getting clear on what you want? Well, you got to start asking yourself some questions. And you got to start thinking out those answers, but what I recommend doing highly recommend, don't just think it in your head, think on paper, think on a Google doc and write out and jot down all of those thoughts of what all those potential things could be. Do a capture list where you could actually go and capture all these phenomenal ideas.
Well, I could go here and I could experience this, or maybe we could stay in a tiny home or maybe we can stay in a luxury Villa or in our case, maybe we can stay in the beach boys of state in Kona, Hawaii. So we had that experience in mind that maybe this is one of the things we would want to be looking for or would meet some of our criteria.
So when you can start capturing, then you can start to work through the next important process. But while you're doing this capture, while you're thinking through these things, you want to ask yourself some additional questions and maybe what can be helpful for many of you is actually just take a second and close your eyes and do a little bit of visualization. Kind of picture what that's going to look like. Kind of picture what you're kind of envisioning that things are going to be like the thing that you want and start to kind of get an understanding of what that feels like and what that could look like so that you can easily start to define in detail exactly what you're going after or where you're going. And by being able to get clear on what it is that you want, you can start to make it measurable so that you actually know, Hey, did I achieve? And did I get to the place that I was looking to? Did I end up, landing in that perfect place, that kind of place that I envisioned or did I end up in some shack, in some far off land that it wasn't what I was dreaming of.
The only way that you can be in control of your destination of your destiny is to have a clear understanding of what you want so you can start to shape that, you start making decisions based on that, and it will simplify nearly everything that you're doing.
So as I'm going through this process, I'm thinking to myself, well, I've captured all the potential ideas. I've gone through the process of visualizing what each of those might feel like, bringing it a little bit of emotion and understanding which ones are going to be most important, which leads me to prioritizing, prioritizing those key things, those pieces that you're really, really looking for, and then finally deciding, making a decision. This is what I want. These are the things that are a must. These are the things that are nice to have. And these are the things that are absolutely not something that I need to prioritize or even look for. That way, you can get granularly focused in one direction and be able to go out and search because there's hundreds of millions of different places that we could have stayed around the world and within the United States in order to go and have this kind of working experience. However, because we got really, really clear, we ended up landing, at this incredible estate. And we were able to get a phenomenal deal because of some of the things that were going on related to the environment that we're in right now.
So you've got your what, and then in order to really make it powerful, you want to get connected that why. And get really emotionally connected with it because that emotion will turn into motion. That emotion is going to turn into the motivation that's going to keep you moving. And it's going to keep that momentum alive, which is what's going to end up getting you to that place. It's going to be the fuel. Yes. Your willpower will get you started. It's going to get that engine moving forward. But the emotion is what's going to keep it in motion. It's going to keep you getting exactly where I want to be.
So we're going to get connect to that fuel. You want to be doing some of that visualization and truly feeling what that's going to feel like. And you've got to believe it, you've got to believe that it's true. So you've got to go out and search for where can you find those beliefs, either inside of you or in examples of other people, other people with beliefs that you can then kind of take in on your own and kind of share their belief. That might be a mentor, that might be a coach, that might be somebody who kind of reminding you that, Hey, you've got this, you're going to be able to kind of go down that path. And with a clear, why, you can know who to search for or where there might be some gaps in that purpose, that's going to keep that drive going.
And a big thing that I always like to refer back to is the whole pain and pleasure principle. The idea that you want to go towards things that are pleasurable and you want to be away from things that are painful. And for some people, they are highly driven by that pleasure seeking behavior. They are heavily driven by the potential of what's possible of being able to go out and do things.
Now, other people are driven by fear. They're driven by the pain. They're driven by the want to avoid pain. More people are driven by the want to avoid pain, but the stronger that you can build that pleasure principle of being able to visualize what's possible and go after it and seek out that feeling, the stronger you can be. But you want to use both to your advantage. So you want to get clear on what are some of the things that are not going to happen some of the consequences in your life, if you don't end up making it to that destination. If you don't end up taking the action every single day or doing the things that are necessary.
And what I like to always recommend people do is an exercise called seven layers deep. So when you figure out what that purpose is, when you understand why you're looking to go to that place or do that thing, or take that action. What I want you to do is actually just ask yourself, why. Just continue to ask yourself, why, continuously until you get to that core reason. And that core reason at the very bottom of it is something that's so strong to your core. You're going to notice how it emotionally pushes you. And it's going to seem so simple once you start diving below the surface.
An example might be, if you're looking at getting started in real estate investing and taking action to go out and build your portfolio, you're not building the portfolio to have a portfolio. Most of the time people are building it because they want to have some financial freedom. Well, why do they want financial freedom? Because they want their family be taking care of. Why do they want their family to be taken care of? Well, they want their family to be taken care of because they want them to have the experiences and the things that they always dreamed of having, but maybe never experienced. Well, why do they want that? Because they don't want them to deal with pain or they want them to have pleasure.
So at the very core, you can keep asking, we could have kept going deeper with that, but you keep asking that question so you can get to the core and really understand this is what's going to move the needle for you.
So at the final step here, now you've got clear on what you're going after and why you're going after it. Now it's time to prioritize and schedule action. And I really recommend putting a plan behind it, which we'll get into in another episode, but you want to schedule what is most important. So if you've got a bunch of whats, if you've got a bunch of things that are important to you that you want, you got to understand, well, which ones are most important? Is my family more important than my business? Or is my business more important than my family? Where along the line do I have those priorities? And there's no right or wrong answer. It might feel like there's a right or wrong or a supposed to, but at the end of the day, depending on where you're at in your life, you've got to make those decisions on what is going to be most important for you.
So you're going to get some priority built in there, and then I'm going to encourage you to schedule those most important in your calendar, the actions that are going to get you there. So if you haven't built that plan yet, if you haven't figured out, well, what are all the things that I can do, the how to my what, in order to get me where I want to go, well, then your next action, the thing you're going to schedule is time for you to sit down and put together a plan or a time to sit down and talk with a mentor about what potential plans could be the best option, or sit down and talk with a potential coach about how I might be able to emotionally get myself in the place to be able to take this action and clear up some of that baggage that's holding me back. Whatever it might be for you, that's what you've got to decide. And then you've got to act upon it.
It's a really simple process, but at the core, when you can get clear on your what, you can really start to really push the needle. So if you guys put this into action and start making this a part of your daily habit of getting clear on what's most important, getting clear on the purpose behind it, and then driving towards scheduling the time to put together the plan so that you could make that a reality. It has been a life changer for me and so many others. And because of it, I'm able to enjoy amazing places, amazing people, and really live a life by my design. I know everyone here can, whatever industry you're in, whether you're passively invested or you're actively investing or anything in between, it's all possible and potential for you.
