KEY TAKEAWAYS
Steven: [00:00:01] There's something really powerful about getting really clear on what you want, going after it, and then figuring out how you're going to end up getting there. And one of the best ways that I've found to actually putting that plan together and figure out what those steps are, what that vision might look like, is by finding other people to model, other mentors, other coaches, other people who are already existing and thriving in the business that you want to be in and finding a way to model what they're doing. And so let's dive right into it.
INTRO: This is the Investor Mindset Podcasts. And I'm Steven Pesavento. For as long as I can remember, I've been obsessed with understanding how we can think better, how we can be better, and how we can do better. And each episode we explore lessons on motivation and mindset from the most successful real estate investors and entrepreneurs in the nation.
Steven: [00:00:57] So when you go down this path of modeling, it's similar to copying what someone else is doing. But it's using someone else's track record, someone else's experience as an example, as a template of what you can do yourself. And when I first got started in real estate, I didn't know very much about the space at all, I had been following HGTV since I was a little kid, I wanted to either be a chef, like Emeril Lagasse with all the Food Network that I was watching, or I wanted to renovate houses, like Bob Vila. And it's ironic that I spent six, seven years in kitchens as a young person working in that space and absolutely loved finding that space of flow, but it wasn't the right fit for the kind of lifestyle I was trying to build. And so I went down that path of renovating houses like Bob Vila, no kidding, right? I learned a lot along the way there. And in all of these examples, one of the ways that helped me accelerate my learning was finding other people who are very good at what they're doing, and modeling their success. We often talked about the story of me meeting my first mentor and finding some skills that I had and trading those skills in order to be able to mentor and apprentice with that person.
Steven: [00:02:10] This is a clear value exchange. But I came into it from a perspective "hey, how can I add value to this person's world and find a way to be able to get into it." And while before that, I spent years and years listening to different podcasts and authors and other successful people who are thinking in a totally different way than I had grown up thinking. But by listening and learning from the way that they think by taking what they had written down in their books, and then actually starting to apply those within my own life, I'm able to model and start seeing some of those same results. And so it wasn't until I first joined my first mastermind group, my first coaching group, if you will, that I really started to see a major change happen for me in my business. And it was by getting surrounded by other people who are doing what I wanted to do, and are already seeing success was what led me to having the competence to do it myself. And by being surrounded by some of those other folks and finding other people whose businesses were already succeeding. And then taking that as a template and applying it to mine was one of the clear reasons I was able to scale from zero to 75 deals my first year, and then continue that progress and growth after, both growing not only in the deals that we're doing, but also in the net profit and the margin. And every single year, in every single way, I found different strategies that helped lead to my growth.
Steven: [00:03:32] And so I think a lot of times people can be really fearful. There's a lot of fear around coaching and mentoring, there's a lot of fear around paying somebody for education or paying for something. But it's interesting, because what I noticed is there's not as much fear around going to university, there's not as much fear around going to the University of Minnesota, or Harvard or St. John's University, or maybe UC Berkeley or any of these great institutions that have been around for a long time, there's not as much fear about going down a four year path and getting a piece of paper that says that you're qualified to do something, but they does seem to be a lot of fear about going and paying for education in the self-education space or heck even paying for a coach. And I had a lot of those fears, those things where I had kind of come to believe that if I was to go down that path of paying for education that I was going to end up being screwed up of my money, that I was really just someone stupid enough to be taken advantage of, to be brought to the cleaners and I looked at other people who went down that path of paying for coaching and mentorship as somebody who was just as silly or just as stupid as any of the people that I was thinking about. And then fortunately for me, I had a partner, a business partner who really believed in the power of coaching and I traded my way into a partnership with him through some skill sets and abilities that I had that he didn't. And in that we ended up joining a coaching program. It was really a mastermind, if you will, and ended up learning a ton, but what It really did for me it was it quickly opened up my eyes to the possibility of having a coach and quickly after I got my own personal development coach and a business coach and started seeing other places that coaches would be able to help benefit me and really drive me in that direction.
Steven:[00:05:16] And so with that, what I noticed was how, as a direct result of finding mentorship, and essentially paying for mentorship, either with my time, my skills or my money, I was able to accelerate my own personal and business growth, it made a huge dramatic change for me. And it's one of the reasons that I'm fortunate enough to be able to host the Investor Mindset, it's one of the reasons I was fortunate enough to be able to have bought and flipped over 200 houses, it's one of the reasons I was fortunate enough to be able to raise over $10 million in just a few years and cycle that money multiple times, and pay my investors, huge dividends and returns all of those things, because I saw other people doing it, and I found a way to get into their circle. And whether that circle is directly right next to them, whether that circle is having direct access or communication, whether that circle is simply just the act of being able to listen to them speak on a podcast, or some other kind of free medium, any of those ways as you can model and learn from other people. And so I just want to remind you guys that right now, as you're listening to this, and every single time we have a great guest on the podcast or when I'm sharing some strategies, or the lessons that I've learned, you're modeling and mentoring right here with me and right with our guests. And you're able to model the strategies that are working for them, and that have been working for me and your own life. And so I want to remind you, and encourage you to go seek out and find other ways that you can get connected with people who are doing great things that you can be surrounded and make your top five people you spend the most time with some people who you look up to some people who are building and creating the life that you want to some people that have the connections and access to people that would dramatically change your life. Because by doing that, whether you're paying for it with your time, your money, or your experience, you're going to see dramatic changes in your life. I know that I did and if I've experienced and I've talked to many other people who've experienced it, then I know that it has to be true. And so let me know or respond back to me or shoot me an email at Steven@vonfinch.com and let me know exactly what your experience has been with mentorship, I'm curious to hear how other people or even myself have made an impact on your life. And in what ways other people or myself have been able to inspire you. It's those little kinds of comments or interactions that really end up filling me up. And maybe as a result I might send you a little bonus. Or maybe we'll even jump on a call and talk through some of the things that have been really working well in your life. And maybe I can learn something from you. So with that said, I'm a big believer in modeling and mentoring. And so go and find people who you can learn from and start applying those strategies that they're using to succeed in your own life. And you'll start to see that same success. So with that said, I'll remind you as I always do, to live a life with inspiring others. And you can do that today by applying some of what we learned. And as always, I want to thank you, thank you so much for taking the time to listen and thank you for being a contributor to our community and be able to help us grow towards our mission of helping inspire and empower a million people to make more money and live more happy every single day with the financial freedom that real estate ends up offering.
