So let's get right into it.
Steven: [00:01:24] We all know about the philosophy of what you focus on, you attract. And at the core, it's simple but it's so true. As Robin Sharma says, what you focus on grows, what you think about expands, and what you dwell upon determines your destiny. So what does Robin mean in his quote? Well at the core of what he's saying here is that we are all dealing with different challenges, different opportunities, different things within our life every single day. But depending on what we put our focus on, and where we're putting our attention to, is going to determine how we are going to end up showing up in our life and therefore what our life is going to be. And therefore, as Robin says, what our destiny is going to be. And so why does this matter? And why is this important, because as business owners and investors, it is absolutely critical that we get ourselves in the right mind state and the right mindset on a consistent, regular basis. And when we're focused on the things that are so easy for us to focus on the things that we've built habits, focusing in on that are not supporting us that are not bringing us in the right direction, they may have been the exact things we needed to get us to where we are right now but they're not the types of things that are going to push us to that next level. So what does that mean? Well as a leader, I have often been that person who is committed to growth, who's committed to growing and learning and asking myself a very powerful question, how can I make this better? How can I improve this? How can this grow? How can this end up becoming something so much better than what it is right now? And what's amazing about this question is what it drives; it drives creativity and an opportunity to grow and to learn new things, and what it also is driving is potentially is focusing on what isn't so great about what's happening in this moment right now.
Steven: [00:03:19] And so as business owners, entrepreneurs, we want to be setting aside some time to make sure that we can focus on that delta, that opportunity, that negative, that judgment, whatever that might be for you, we want to be setting aside time so that we can focus on so we can make changes happen in our business and understand what needs to go and what needs to stay, but when we can make a little bit of a shift, we can actually end up coming from a place of acceptance and appreciation, gratitude, as silly as it might sound from a business perspective. That's going to end up pushing us forward into doing really great, incredible things within our business. So when I accentuate this story, I think it's going to help drive home the difference between what I'm talking about. So when we look at two business owners that run identical businesses, and they're both successful, they're both driving things or they're both starting at the exact same starting point; and one business owner is constantly recognizing the problems and challenges in their business, and they're focusing 95% of their time there. They focus 95% on the problem and 5% on the solution, 5% on what's good about it, 5% on that appreciation, what is that going to end up looking like for them? What's that going to produce? Now you tell me, I know what it might produce in my business, but will it produce yours? But then we have a second business owner, and this was this owner. Her time is focused on recognizing the problems as well but the majority of the focus is spent on recognizing the solution. What's great about this, how do we move forward? Only 5% is focused on that problem. And how is this business owner's business going to end up turning out? What is the upside for this business owner? What is that experience going to be like for them? As you answer this question for yourself, I think you can start to see from this very polar opposite example, that when we can focus 95% of our focus on the solution, we can bring ourselves from this place of always looking to make something better, to appreciating what is already amazing about what is. And the reason why it's important at first to go 95%, to go to the other extreme, is to break the habit, break that habit and experience what it's like to look for the brightness within the darkness. I wouldn't recommend running your business every single day from that place, but if you're a person who is typically focused on 95%, how can things be improved? Instead of focusing 95% about what is already amazing about this, then it's a perfect exercise for you to make that shift and start focusing 95% on the solution because what it's going to end up bringing for you, is it going to bring you into an energized state, a state of appreciation, of gratitude, a state of being able to flow through the challenges that are coming at us every single day. And what does that do for you? What it's most likely going to do for you because it's what it's done for me and I'm sharing all of this not as somebody who is sitting up on a mountaintop looking down and saying this is how it's got to be done and I'm perfect. As a person who's practicing this every single day, just maybe a few steps ahead of some of you, and maybe a few steps behind some others. But at the core, what it ended up doing for me and what I think it will do for you is it will start to give you a little bit of perspective and that perspective will end up leading to change and that change will end up leading to some balance, and that balance, what I'm hoping that balance comes is still way focused more on the solution than the opportunity to improve because what that is going to do is it's going to end up again, driving you forward with a lot more energy, a lot more appreciation, frankly, a lot more happiness. At the end of the day, why do we get into business, we get into business, because we want to make money, we want to be able to have experience, we want to have power, we want to have significance, we want to make an impact, we want to make a contribution, all of these things that we're going after, at the core below the surface of all these things we want to feel good. We want to feel happy, we want to feel connected, we want to feel loved, and we want to feel like we're making a difference and one of the amazing things is that just by shifting this if you happen to be one of those overachievers like me, if you happen to be one of those people, who are always looking to improve things, this little shift might make a big difference for you.
