KEY TAKEAWAYS

1. When you go into the world of entrepreneurship, you’re the boss, and that’s why personal development and mindset growth are so important, because when you’re on your own… it’s up to YOU to find that motivation, drive and to get the most out of yourself and your business.

2. Ask yourself if what you’re doing is actually what you really want to do. Follow your internal voice.

3. After how tough last year was, this year is going to be one the most important years in your life for getting into the right mindset.

4. We all have one or two main fears and those are: Am I enough? And if I’m not enough will I be loved?

5. If you can understand why you’re doing the things you’re doing, then you can start to modify and change who you are and what actions you’re actually taking-

6. At the core everyone wants the same thing: They want to be connected to others, they want to have community and they want to be loved by others.

7. If you lead with significance and certainty first, why not try to change this to contribution and growth? This will give you the insight to be able to understand others and while understanding yourself.

8. In society today people are always looking to change others so that they don’t feel a certain way. It’s so disempowering to have to look around and say “don’t say that, it makes me feel uncomfortable. Don’t do that it makes me feel uncomfortable.”. We can take back the power though, by changing the way we feel simply by changing the meaning that’s associated with a situation.

9. “If you can’t, then you must.” - Tony Robins

STEVEN [00:00:01] In a changing time, one of the most important things we can do is get ourselves in community and learn; how do we deal with this uncertainty, be able to drive through it and end up making big changes in our life.  On today's episode, we've got two amazing guests who just finished an incredible experience, changing their lives and changing the way that you view the world.  We're going to dive into a little bit about some of the ways that personal growth has impacted their real estate investment career exactly how it might be able to impact yours. STEVEN [00:01:52] All right.  Guys welcome back to the Investor Mindset Podcast.  I'm your host, Stephen pesavento.  And today I've got two amazing women in the studio, Julie and Annie Dickerson.  How are you guys doing today?

ANNIE [00:02:02] Excellent.

STEVEN [00:02:03] Excellent.  I love that.  Julie and Annie are both real estate syndicators who live in the Bay Area with their families, and they help investors passively invest in commercial real estate investments.  They are the  author of the book Investing for good, the surprising strategy for building wealth while also making an impact, and they're the CO hosts of the podcast Investing for good, which I've been on.  So I definitely recommend you guys check that out.  We're going to talk about something today that I think is near and dear to our hearts and a lot of you guys as listeners, and it's the importance of personal development, personal growth and mindset in our lives.  And we both -- ironically we just found out we're at the exact same event diving in, making changes happen and committing to that growth that we all are excited about.  And that event happened to be a date with Tony Robbins.  So what I really want to talk about Julie and Annie, is what impact has personal development and personal growth made on your personal lives as well as your careers?

Annie : [00:03:05] Well I will start.  So I should start with my whole journey because I followed all the rules growing up, I made straight A's, I studied hard as valedictorian, I went to an Ivy League school, I did all the things and then I figured I'd graduated from college, I get a good job, and then I would be off to the races.  And so I did that and I got my first job actually, I decided to join Teach for America and I was a fourth grade teacher, and that was my first foray into personal development because it was a clue that -- wait a second, there's something more, there's something deeper here than just getting straight A's and going to the next step because there was this impact piece that was really important to me.  And then over the next 10 years, I had nine different jobs because I kept trying to fit myself into different places and I was trying to go for promotion and then different industries and all this stuff and really trying to find my place and I thought at that point, I was reading lots of books, trying to do the Who Moved My Cheese with the parachute thing and all the the self discovery quizzes and personality tests.  I had studied psychology in college, I thought I had it all figured out and I was like okay, I'm going to figure this thing out but I couldn't hold down one single job.  I kept wanting to move from place to place and it wasn't until I quit my last W2 job that I had and jumped into entrepreneurship that the self discovery, the personal development, the mindset really changed.  And I was off on a completely different journey.  I didn't even know that this whole world existed, I always thought that entrepreneurs and business owners were like in it for the money they carried briefcases and wore suits, and we're in big cities, and I thought they were just about like trying to make more money.  And now that I'm on this side of it, I can see that money is one piece of it, it really is about helping people and it's about that impact.  And so through this journey, I've discovered so much more about myself than I ever knew was possible and date with destiny was one big recent piece of that.

STEVEN [00:05:28] Well it's so interesting because when you go into the world of entrepreneurship, all of a sudden, you don't have somebody else telling you what direction to go, and you don't have somebody else being that leader, you are the leader for yourself.  And that's one of the reasons I think that personal development, mindset growth, all these things are so core and key to the people who are succeeding on their own as entrepreneurs, as business owners, is because all of a sudden, you get out on your own and you have to learn, hey how do I create my own motivation?  How do I create my own set of guardrails for me to be able to exist and operate within?  And how do I get the most out of myself, while also living the life that I actually want to live?  What about you, Julie, what impact has personal growth made in your world?

Julie: [00:06:17] Yeah.  I mean, so for me, it really started when my husband and I were looking at buying a home here in the Bay Area, we kind of had done our rental properties and we were looking at buying a bigger home and kind of moving on up.  And I sat there and I asked myself is this what I want to do for the next 35 years of my life?  Is sitting here at this desk, and working my job to pay off this mortgage on this home we were about to buy?  It was a huge mortgage, one that we probably shouldn't have been getting ourselves into.  And I realized that that wasn't the path, and that that wasn't the answer for me, and that I wanted to have more but it's hard because we're so trained to believe that this is our reality, as you go out there, you get an education, you get a job, you buy a house, and you work for the next 35 years of your life to pay off that home, you retire.  And if you make it that far, and you live the dream.  And there was something in that moment that told me, this voice inside of me that said, there's something else more out there but in order for you to get to the point of really believing that little voice, and following that voice down the pathway to lead you to you don't know where, you got to have the right mindset.  Because without that mindset, you can get lost along the path, and you can end up somewhere that maybe you didn't intend to.  And so going to events like Date with Destiny and all these kinds of events that we've been to over the last couple of years, I have been so instrumental in not only my personal life, in allowing me to grow and strengthen the relationships that I have in my personal life but now also in my relationship with Annie and our partnership, and it's been amazing.  Like even just going on Date with destiny, we have learned so much about what drives her, and who she is as a person, what drives me and who I am as a person so that we can work better together in our business and it has been a game changer for us in our business.  And there's a day at Date with destiny called relationship day; that was I didn't even know what I was getting myself into but they were like, oh, everybody's so excited about relationship day, I guess for people who had been there before.  And I'm like, what's this relationship day and got blown away by relationship day, and it's so funny, because that day after relationship day, I went upstairs to see my husband and made just a couple of comments about something and he was just like, wow, who are you?  And it has continued even though I have left and it's been so impactful for us, not only personally but also professionally as well.

STEVEN [00:09:01] Yeah.  And at the core of this, what I'm really hearing from both of you, it's interesting, because it's at the core of you guys both going on this path of realizing your own independence and being able to go out and kind of work as an entrepreneur and create for yourself.  But at the core, I think it's really all about intention.  It's being able to get intentional about the things that are most important in your life and I can tell because you've been investing this year in going and learning these things so that you can be and show up as the best version.  And this is the year of mindset, right?  It's the year that it's probably more important than it has been over the last number of years has always been critical because we're always dealing with challenges but this has been a year that's been full of many more challenges and because of that it's so important to invest in finding ways to learn some of these strategies to just be more of yourself.  And I think at the core, that's really what you're talking about here with understanding what drives you.  So I'd love to understand, from your perspective, what is it that drives each of you and how did you go about understanding that so that the listeners themselves might be able to relate not only to what is pushing each of you for because I know that it's individual to you, but they might be able to get just a little bit of a hint of an idea of what it is that drives them through hearing your story.

Julie: [00:10:27] Yeah.  I think for me it was getting up every day and going to a job and just feeling like I was not having the impact that I wanted to have that I felt like I could help more people that I felt like I could give more.  And I felt like in my day to day work that I was doing, like I was only able to help maybe a handful of people.  And it was that thought, getting up every day putting my feet on the ground and feeling like I was only maybe impacting 20 or 30 people, maybe 40 people I don't know, but certainly it wasn't hundreds and 1000s of people like we are now.  And that's what continues to drive me; to be able to make that impact and to be able to get up every morning and say wow, like we are literally in a very small way now changing the landscape of the real estate industry as well as other investors, as well as investors, families lives as well as all of the residents that live in the communities that we're buying.  To be able to get up every day and feel like that impact is really being made, and not a lot of that is coming from me.  That's for me what drives me.  I know a lot of that is the same for Annie as well.  But yeah, I know that's same for both of us, Daddy,

STEVEN [00:11:38] Annie?

ANNIE [00:11:38] Well one thing that Date with destiny really taught me was -- you know, date with destiny and unleashed the power within all of Tony Robbins events are filled with high achievers, often entrepreneurs, but not always.  But they are high achievers, they are driven people, they are very successful for the most part, and they come to these events because often they want to enhance that they want to go further.  And so at first you come to these events, and you're like, oh my gosh, I can't believe I'm in a room with this person, this person and they built a business and oh my gosh, they're making seven figures and all this stuff, right?  And throughout the event, through every scenario, every talk that you have, you realize that everyone, no matter how successful they are, everybody is there just I mean, at the core, everybody is just wanting to create that impact, and to get more love.  And so I know it sounds fluffy but that was like the one takeaway; that no matter how successful you are, or no matter what behaviors, what decisions are driving you at the core, it's all about that love and that acceptance, and everybody struggles with that question of Am I worthy?  Am I enough?  And so I think that's the one thing that unifies all of us and that was one of my big takeaways from that event.

STEVEN [00:13:10] It's something that's not talked about in business, but at the core of what you're saying is that we all have one or two main fears.  And those main fears is, am I enough?  And therefore, if I'm not enough, will I be loved?  And so it's interesting, because if you can break things down to their core, it makes it very simple for you to understand why you're doing the things you're doing.  And if you can understand why you're doing the things you're doing, you can start to modify and change who you are and what actions you're actually taking.  And so it's almost like what you're saying is by getting to this blueprint, you were able to realize that all of these people, all of these other achievers, all these driven individuals that are showing up, that are dominating at the top of their field, or people who are in the worst dumps of their life.  They're all dealing with the same internal challenges.  And I think one of the takeaways that I had in listening to you guys here, is such a powerful reminder that we're all looking for the same types of things in life, we're just looking for them in a different way.  And so it really gives us the opportunity to be reminded how connected we all are, how much in common we all have.  Because right now in the world today, we've been dealing with a lot of challenges and there's a lot of different views and values that are being put at the top of people's lists.  And so there's a lot of fighting and a lot of argumentation but at the core, everyone wants the same thing.  They want to be connected to other people, they want to have community and they want to be loved by others, even if at the core they refuse to accept it.  That's just psychologically built into our nature.  And so how do you think that ends up playing into changes that you're going to be making in your business moving forward as a result of learning that.

ANNIE [00:15:06] Well I think at the core of our business, from the very beginning, I mean, the name of our business is Good egg investments.  So at the very beginning, it was always about helping people to invest for good.  And so it was always about how can we create a win/win situation for everyone involved?  For our investors, and helping them to build passive income and wealth for their families, and helping the communities that we invest in in really transforming and revitalizing those communities and improving the lives of the residents who live there.  And so all of that has not changed at all, it's only been enhanced by everything that we've learned, I think, whenever we go to one of these Tony Robbins events, personally, I always think like, Oh, I'm going for the business, like, we're going to drive the business, we're going to bring so much back to the business.  And every time I go, I come back, and I'm like, oh, my gosh, I learned so much about my personal life. I'm going to change so much about how I think about things, and so I don't know if there's going to be any tangible changes to the business, because we're still going to do a lot of the same things that we were doing, maybe just enhanced but I think personally, Julie, and I got so much out of it about what makes us tick and when we think about how to bring more gratitude and appreciation into our daily lives, how to better work together and serve each other.  And so I think, on the outside, there may not be a whole lot of changes, but on the inside, there's a ton of changes.

Julie: [00:16:48] Well I think one thing I would just add to that too, is we learned a lot about what we lead with.  And I realized that what I lead with is or was significant first and certainty.  And because I lived with that, and needing so much of that significance and certainty, it affected the way we ran the business, it affected my relationships with Annie, my personal relationships and I was never getting the outcome that I really wanted, which as you mentioned, Steven is that connection, and that feeling of contribution and growth.  And so for me personally, now, it's moved from significance and certainty to contribution and growth.  And so whenever I'm in the business, now, it's no longer coming from a place of well, I need that 100% certainty in every decision we make and every conversation that I have, but rather, it's how can I contribute?  How can I come to the business and show up as my best self and come from a place of wanting to contribute and wanting to grow?  And wow, what a different business that will be, when I come to the table, when Annie comes to the table from that perspective of hey, I want to contribute, I want to grow, what can we do not from a place of, I need to be important, I need to be significant.  I need certainty as to what an impact that's going to make.  And so I think that that's another level of insight that we were able to walk away with from Date with destiny.  It was just kind of seeing what we are prioritizing in these different areas of our lives.  And how would our lives change if we reprioritize and had something different there instead of the things that we had before?

STEVEN [00:18:23] Yeah.  It's a huge difference, too.  And for the people that aren't familiar with this concept of the six human needs, it's a simple way of understanding what are the six universal needs that everybody regardless of culture or background has that they need, and that they prioritize in a different order, and a different way of feeling and experiencing those needs end up leading to essentially a different life.  It's kind of like the lens that somebody might be looking at the world through.  And so what Julie is talking about here is this idea of significance and when you hear it, when you hear the description of you're going to think, well, I probably felt like that, is that a bad thing?  And the truth is, most people are driven by certainty and significance, right?  We want to feel special, we want to feel unique.  We want to feel like we're different, like we're being recognized, and we can feel significant in a way that's positive, or we can feel significant in a way that's negative, and ends up drawing energy from others and from ourselves.  But the concept of looking at the world from a perspective of I'm going to be going and giving first I'm going to be contributing, how can I help?  How can I make a difference for you, versus the perspective of how can I show up and be recognized as unique and valuable is a super important change.  And so if you're listening to this, and this ends up leading to any curiosity, I highly encourage you to dive a little bit deeper on YouTube and look further into something so that you can understand a little bit more about this because it actually does make the biggest difference.  And there's nothing wrong with whatever it is that you're valuing but what's really cool about learning some of these strategies is that what it does is it gives you the insight to be able to understand other people, while understanding yourself and how you're showing up in that situation.

Julie: [00:20:18] Yeah.  And I feel like it also allows you to have a little bit more feeling of control, oddly enough over your life because you now see, oh, I can choose to act like this, or I can choose to act like that and it's really my decision.  Whereas before, you were almost acting out of default, because you don't know what you don't know and you just kind of -- are being the person that you think you are, you're like, well, that's just how I am.  But then when you go to an event like Date with Destiny, and you realize that no, we all have these options, and it's like, wow, I do like oh my gosh, I didn't even know.  And so now I know when I'm acting a certain way that I have this, I have the choice, I can either choose to act this way if I wanted to, or I can choose to act a different way.  And it gives you just so much more feeling of control over the decisions that you make in your life and ultimately, the outcomes.

STEVEN [00:21:10] Yeah.  It really is.  And that's one of the things is when you can understand how you can take full accountability for everything that happens, for the way that you show up, for the way that you feel, for what's going on around you.  What's amazing about that is that this was talked about quite a bit at the event but it's been something that's been talked about for many years.  But the problem in our society today is people looking for other people to change how they are so that they don't feel a certain way.  And it's so disempowering to have to look around and say, well, don't say that makes me feel uncomfortable.  Don't do that, that makes me feel uncomfortable.  Yet, it's the common thing of kind of playing the victim card today, but when we can actually come from a place of, we can change the way that we feel simply by changing the meaning that's associated with it, we actually take back the power, and that's really insightful, it almost makes you feel like you're no longer locked in a cage of other people controlling how you feel and how you show up and what happens to you in your life but it puts you in the position of being somebody who can make a difference and actually make an impact in the world.

Julie: [00:22:22] Yes

ANNIE [00:22:23] Yeah.  Oh my gosh, you just said something that offended me. Oh, my gosh, Steven, don't ever say that again.

STEVEN [00:22:31] Watch out I might -- that is pretty common today. I'm not going to lie.  I've had the same exact conversation with people and had them be triggered.  And so it's so valuable to be able to have that perspective that it's okay for you to not feel okay.

ANNIE [00:22:44] Yeah.  And you said it right when you said it's, it's really disempowering when you give that control and that power away, because that is your power, and it should be within yourself, to control your own reaction, your own emotion, your own experience.  And when you give that away, it really is quite disempowering.

STEVEN [00:23:07] And with that idea in mind, if we're thinking specifically of taking accountability, recognizing that we're in control of the way that we show up, and this view of the world that we're going to take, coming from that perspective, into your business, into real estate into investing into capital placement into finding deals, how does that change your day to day, both the way that you feel and as well as the results that happen in your business?

Julie: [00:23:33] Oh my gosh, I mean you set the goal, and then it's just a matter of like, executing, right.  And it's no longer a question of like how is this going to happen, right, it's like, and that's one big takeaway I took too, is it's not about how, like the how will come.  It's about setting that intention on the onset, and this is prime time, we're recording this in December.  But just setting that intention for the new year and saying, this is what I'm going to do for the year, I don't yet know how that's going to happen, and  we've got RPMs, and all these other things we can work on to get there, right.  But it's really setting that intention, and again, it goes back to having the right mindset, because without the right mindset, you can have the how, but without the right mindset, if you don't believe that you can do it, it doesn't even matter what you do after that, because if you don't believe then it's going to be absolutely certain that it will not happen because you as the person who's supposed to make this happen, doesn't believe you can do it, and then it's actually going to happen.  It certainly won't happen.  So I think that's what I would add Annie, I don't know, you have something else to add?

ANNIE [00:24:36] Sure.  Stuck on top, which is that with those six human needs in mind, before it was often with startups, when you're growing your business, you have to have a certain level of certainty to know that you're going to have enough money coming in to sustain yourself to continue to do this whole entrepreneur thing.  Right?  And so you have to have a certain level of certainty and then you have to have some variety and some significance to know that, hey, you're bringing something new to the marketplace and you're attracting new customers, or new investors or new deals.  So we've seen this play out over the last few years that we've been in business.  And now I think Date with destiny has come at a perfect point, because now we're ready to really transition into those upper levels of connection and growth and contribution.  I mean for ourselves, for our investors, for the communities we're investing in and for the team that we're growing.  And so we're proud of all of those pieces, and then I think, moving into the new year, with that new lens, we're shifting to think about, okay, well, how can we contribute even more now that we have some of this certainty we have some of the significance, people know who we are, we're connecting with more people, okay, how can we bring in more of that growth, and more of that contribution, and continue to give back even more than we have before in different and more meaningful ways,

STEVEN [00:26:06] Powerful language there with even more, you know, just recognizing what is already there.  So for those people who are listening, and they're thinking to themselves, you know, what I want to put myself in community, I want to find other people who are like me, who are committed to development and driving, I want to be coached and mentored, I want to be able to take my life to another level, but I don't feel like I can do it, or I don't feel like I confidently believe that I'm going to end up getting outcomes that are going to justify it financially.  So in my mind, maybe I'm stuck in a place of thinking I couldn't spend, you know, 1000s of dollars to attend an event or I couldn't spend money on coaching.  What would you say to those people and what would you recommend that they start thinking instead about going down that path?

ANNIE: [00:26:59] As Tony Robbins would say, if you can't, then you must.  And I remember the first time that I had -- before I had quit my W2 job, and I was thinking about spending money at that time, it was still spending money, not investing in myself, but I was thinking about it in that way spending money to buy this course and I still remember very vividly, it was $5,000, which at the time for me seemed like this huge monumental, insurmountable amount of money.  I don't know why but I never spent that amount of money.  I was like before, if there was $100 art class, for example, that I wanted to take, like, I don't know, $100, that's a lot of money.  So $5,000, to me, seemed like a lot of money but it was something that I really wanted to do as a real estate course and it would teach me all the ins and outs of how to run a syndication.  And at the time, I was like, Oh, I don't know, but I feel like I need to do this, and so finally I did, I invested that $5,000 and that's what I realized was I wasn't spending $5,000 to buy like, an outfit to put in my closet, it was $5,000 that I was investing in myself.  And I've invested 10s hundreds of 1000s of dollars into real estate, sometimes into even stocks or Bitcoin and to take that investment and compare it to myself, come on, I would invest in myself every time.  And so that's what I would say to people out there is if you're thinking about oh, I don't know if I should invest or spend the money on something like this.  Think about it, not as you're spending money, but really think about it as an investment.  And I think it's actually what I've learned is that it's a good thing when you're putting some money on the line.  And often the more the better because I can think of many times when I went to a free event, and because it was free and took it for granted, I didn't get much out of it.  But when I invested 5000/10,000 or more then hey, I'm paying attention. I'm going to get every single penny out of what I invested in this course this coaching this mastermind, and I have since invested in many courses, many coaching sessions, and all of it has contributed to our growth and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Julie: [00:29:34] Yeah.  I mean, I think I would just add that, when you put things out into the world, investing in something like this, like a self development thing is almost more important in the beginning than any kind of like how to course, it's like what I was just saying, right?  Like, you've got to get yourself in the right mindset so that you can set the intention out there.  The how will come, I guarantee anybody who's listening, who's like thinking well I want to quit my job in a year or I want to quit my job in five years, and I want to become a real estate mogul.  And I want to own millions of dollars worth of apartments, you've got to kind of come with the right mindset, because there's tons of coaching courses out there that will tell you how to do that.  And not everyone in those coaching programs are succeeding. And I guarantee it's because of the mindset piece, if you don't put the intention out there with the I can do this and the belief in yourself, it doesn't matter, you can have all the tools in your tool belt, and it won't matter because if again, it goes back to if you don't believe so investing in like a self development thing is almost like the first thing that you need to do.  But just to answer one of your other questions, too like if you're thinking this is so much money, this is such a big investment.  One quick and easy way is to buy a Tony Robbins book and read the book and really give it your all because he'll say in the book, like try, I want you to try this for a month, just like it is in the real events.  And he'll say I want you to try this for a moment and really playful out and try it.  It's the cheapest way, I don't know how much books are these days, but you can probably get it on Audible for like 12 bucks for credit or whatever, and try it out.  And that's like the cheapest, easiest way, go on YouTube, I do it all the time.  So I was just telling Annie that I recreated my own Date with destiny the other day and played Tony talking at some conference they had.  It was like an hour long or something, and then on another screen I played UPW playlist.  And I was just jumping up and down in my living room like listening to Tony, and this is all free.  So go out there and give it a try and see if it works for you.  You know,

STEVEN [00:31:35] Yeah. It's really easy to get caught up in this fear that you're not going to get what you're looking for out of it.  But usually when you commit to something, and obviously paying for something is like a really deep level of commitment, you're going to find a way to get value out of that.  When you select the right material to work with the right people you end up going to make changes, they might not even be the changes that you thought you needed to make, but they're going to be the changes that you actually did need to make in that moment.  So thank you guys so much for being here.  It was really great to talk a little bit about personal development, talk a little about Tony and understand exactly the impact that had on you being able to attend that event and how you're going to actually apply that in your business.  So obviously, you guys are doing amazing things in real estate.  We'll have to have you back on sometime and talk about some of those, but where can people find out more about you to get in touch?
