In this modern age, social media remains one of the most powerful tools in online networking—so much so that it has become a necessity for every type of entrepreneur today. If you look through Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and even Instagram, you’ll see millions of entrepreneurs sharing their businesses online, creating relationships with their audiences, and making connections with other business owners both in and out of the industry. As a modern business owner, you probably already have the first two down pat, but what about the last one? Making connections with other entrepreneurs is as easy as sending them a friend request on Facebook or DMing them on Twitter. However, how many of these connections turn into actual valuable relationships both on and off of the platform? In this episode, we talk about how you can bring online connections outside of the app, and how you can lead those connections down a path where you can bring genuine value to each other. With the power that social media holds, expanding your network is incredibly easy—that is, if you know what to do and how to do it. If you want to learn more about how you can connect with other entrepreneurs online and then solidify that connection offline, you wouldn’t want to miss this episode of Mindset Minutes.

Steven: [00:01:24] Many of us know the power of social media and how we can use it as a tool to get our message out to many other people. And for many of us, social media is actually using us. We are the product. But this is where it's really important, we can use social media to carry our message forward, to put out posts, to share content, and to be able to interact with other people. But where it really turns into social networking is how can we take those interactions, that engagement and be able to carry that into a real relationship with real people. We have connections to so many more people than we ever had before, when 10, 20 years ago, your network was based on the people you went to college with, the people in your neighborhood, the people your family knew, maybe the people from your country club, but today, even your kids have 1000 connections on social media. And this is where it gets really, really cool is that regardless of the platform that you're thinking about using regardless of what platform happens to be the one that's in style now, whether that be Facebook or Instagram, whether it be LinkedIn or YouTube, whether that be tik tok or clubhouse, or any of the different tools in between. What it really comes down to is, how are you going to put your message out on a consistent basis, the media portion, but how are you going to actually interact with people. And so when it comes down to building those interactions, that engagement, those connections, taking those connections offline and bringing them into the real world, that's where the networking piece really comes. And so we are living in a world where many more of us are spending much more time online than we ever had before and we were already in a direction in life where so much of what we do is online. And that's why it's even more important that we're spending that time intentionally networking and connecting to other people because we all hear this term, the phrase, "your net worth is determined by your network". And that's really just based on who are those people that are in your sphere of influence, those people who you are learning from, connecting with. How can you be a value to them and how can they be a value to you. So when it comes down to the platform, each platform is going to have different expectations of how you're going to interact. And that is up to you to figure out what is expected when it comes to interactions outside of the application. When you're talking about something like Instagram, if you're commenting, and engaging and liking and dming, and having conversations within the app, that seems to be the norm. Bringing things outside of Instagram is a little bit less common, it's not as common for somebody to take that relationship and bring that offline as quickly without building that relationship. Now, in contrast, when it comes to LinkedIn, it's quite common. it's quite common for you to have a quick three response message with somebody on LinkedIn or in the comments and be able to immediately bring that into a real life connection in person or on the phone or something in between. And so you have to understand platform wise, which platform is going to be best for you, depending on your industry, depending on where your people are, and depending on frankly, what you like to do. Are you a person who's looking to get directly on the phone, are you somebody who wants to engage with people on a platform and be able to interact. And frankly, what platform of the time is going to be best. And that's where it really comes down to timing. So people are at home right now more than they ever have before. We talked a little bit about this. And it's a great time to be connecting with people. And you have to understand going back to the platform point. What is that amount of time that you're interacting with somebody before it makes sense to truly network before it makes sense to be able to offer value to somebody else, before it makes sense to jump on a phone call or invite them to a webinar, all of these different tools are really valuable. And the key is just understanding how you can unlock them for your own business. And so for me, what I found, so many of my mentors that have found success online, the people that I look up to, the people that I think you should be looking up to as well, the way that it's worked most effectively for me is coming at this from a perspective of asking powerful questions, being genuinely interested, and engaging with people online. And so it's quite common for somebody to connect with you on social media. If you're in the real estate space, if you're in some groups, you're probably going to get some blind connections with people that you haven't met. It's a great opportunity, send them a question, why did you connect with me? What attracted you to my profile? What led you to connecting? What do you do? Tell me a little bit more about yourself, it really comes down to being genuinely interested when we can ask these right questions. And we can come from a place of genuine curiosity and interest, we can lead ourselves down a path with other people to a place where there might be an opportunity for us to be able to help them or have them be able to help us. And we do that by asking questions. And what I found to be extremely valuable is that when we go from a place of asking questions, we go from a place of engaging with somebody online, in chat, in comments, in message boards, whatever that might be. I really personally like to bring that offline. I'm a person who's a verbal communicator, I really like to jump on a quick phone call, a quick zoom call, and maybe I like to meet with people. And we have to understand where each of us are at and our career and who we're communicating with, and what works best for us. For you, you might be a person who likes to meet in person, you might like to do coffee meetings, direct face to face. And you might try to find a way and have time where people are comfortable doing that. What I found is phenomenal, is a quick phone call and it's even better. You can do a lot of stuff over email but there's something that a quick 10 minute phone call can do that really brings two people together. And so for me, that's what I shoot for, you'll have to ask yourself, what ways do you like to interact and engage with other people? And how are you going to take that networking to another level? Let me know down in the comments below over on social media via dm about how exactly you like to do that. Are you a person who likes to connect only through the app, are you somebody who wants to get on the phone, very curious to kind of hear what's working for you out there in space. But what it really comes down to is figuring out your strategy and then doing it consistently. If you're going to be interacting and networking online, it's absolutely critical that you come from the right place that you come not from a place of spamming people, because there's nothing worse than receiving that email that is a page long offering something when you haven't even had a connection with them and those follow up messages, doing exactly the same. Don't be that person, be a person who comes with genuine interest, be a person who comes with genuine value, be a person who comes looking to connect to build relationships and be okay if other people aren't at the same place where you are. But if you come with that kind of energy, you're going to end up connecting with more people. And as I always talk about, if you ask more people for what you're looking for, you're going to get it, you're going to end up finding people and connections and other people who are going to help you get there because a lot of people want to go down the same path as you and maybe there's a chance for you to go down with them, and maybe there's a chance for you to lead the way. So thank you guys so much for joining me and I look forward to seeing you guys next time.
